Karten entstanden durch Seefahrt und später durch militärische Expansionen. Vor allem der Kolonialismus prägt die Kartographie bis heute.
Was in der Mitte einer Karte liegt, wird als wichtig wahrgenommen. Es ist eine bedeutsame Entscheidung, was wir in die Mitte platzieren.
Der Kartograph Gerhard Mercator entwickelt im 16. Jahrhundert die lange Zeit bedeutendste Weltkarte, die heute jedoch für ihre verzerrte Darstellung kritisiert wird: Europa etwa rückt ins Zentrum und ist in Relation zu groß.
